[short] Story Sunday #17: Under the Rainbow.

a story by pushkar prabhat

Riding on the wave, sitting in her bubble, she was with her lover. It was a date. And that date was special for her. They had been together for almost 3 years and she had recently decided to make this permanent. The proposal was unfolding. The flowers bloomed as she started confessing. The butterflies from across the ocean had come to witness the beautiful and vulnerable moment. From afar, an onlooker might get the illusion of those colorful wings carrying the bubble, but those flies were careful, they did not want to burst her bubble. The sun had descended to the horizon, eager to pull out rainbows through that film.

As she carefully carved her beautiful secret, for him to admire, the flowers evidently bloomed towards shades of pink and then red. And soon her delicate masterpiece was ready, whispering lovingly, the words that throughout history have proven their power to move mountains, “I love you”. In those moments of silence that followed, it seemed as if the universe had stopped and time moved, only, with every blink of her eyes.

It was a lot of pressure on him, with being the centre of attention of a whole universe. For the past three years, she had been the only centre of his attention. But, when at a crossroad, one should consider which way to go. And when the crossroad is one that can never be crossed again, one must consider and consider hard.

As the time passed, a few dark patches of clouds appeared on the horizon. And soon, the colours of the sky gave in to the numbness of pitch stark. The blooms lost vigour. Their pale petal craved moisture. Rain was imminent, but she fought hard. He every attempt to rekindle her collapsing heartbeat, resulted in lightening, cracking the universe apart, a layer at a time. The thunder had scared away the butterflies. And then the drop fell from her eyes, and the universe complied. The very drop of rain burst through her world. The lovers were left wet, and now it was the waves’ turn to rise.

He took her hand into his, and rose from his chair. The universe stopped once again. The chaos froze and even the sun, found its way through the darkness, to witness the divine moment. The butterflies came back, just in time to hear the melody, “I love you, too”. And as the lovers locked lips in surrender, the rainbow rose to provide shade and privacy.  Two universes had collided, and love had conquered all.
